The Siesta Resta.

We have become accustomed to wearing long hours, early starts and constant productivity almost as badges of achievement. The idea that productivity is measured by the amount of time we spend working has become deeply embedded in modern work culture.

But I've been thinking about something for the past week: perhaps we've designed the working day the wrong way around.

I naturally find that an afternoon rest gives me a second wind. After some time to recharge, I can continue working with energy well into the evening — sometimes until 1 or 2am.

Then I was talking with my neighbour, who is approaching retirement...

  1. That conversation took me back to something I remember from infant school.
  2. There were beds laid out for the children, and at certain times of the day, we rested.
  3. Nobody thought it was unusual. Nobody thought we were being lazy. It was simply part of the day.
  4. So why did that change when we grew up and entered the workforce?

The beds disappeared. The desks arrived. Rest became something we were expected to do after work, rather than something that could be accommodated within it.

Yet the human body didn't change.

Sport has understood the importance of recovery for a long time. Athletes don't train continuously without stopping; recovery is part of how they maintain performance.

Perhaps there is something in that for the rest of us.

I'm not suggesting that every workplace needs rows of beds, or that everyone should take an afternoon nap. But what if workplaces simply made room for the possibility?

A quiet space. Furniture that could serve more than one purpose. Somewhere a person could sit back for twenty minutes during a long shift, particularly when the work itself is physic
